What is SEM?
“SEM” used to stand for “Search Engine Marketing” which encompasses both Organic Search Engine Optimization and Paid / Sponsored Search. With the rise of paid search, and companies starting just to manage paid search, “SEM” has become associated simply with Paid Search.
If I buy sponsored listings will Google give my site better organic listings?
Absolutely not. Although Google loves that you buy paid listings they will not return the favor with better organic rankings. The major search engines (except some gray areas with Yahoo) do a good job of keeping free listings free.
Can’t I just create optimized pages for search engines but re-direct to another page for end users?
Sure, if you want to get banned from Google, Yahoo, MSN, ASK then yes, you can build some pretty sneaky systems. While you’re at it you can insert keywords on your page the same color as the background so that only search engines see them. Tricky, huh? UpWord only provides “ethical SEO services” to protect your brand on the major search engines.
Doesn’t the top listing just go to the person who pays the most?
As mentioned above, the organic listings are not influenced by your wallet. The top Sponsored Listings used to go to the highest bidder. You can no longer simply outbid your competitor by one cent and show up higher. All engines now have some sort of “quality score” which means you have to bid high enough but not necessarily the most.
